Planning your wedding timeline doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Below is a DJ-led breakdown of a typical wedding day, with realistic time ranges and expert insight to help everything flow smoothly; from ceremony to last dance.
Section 1: Ceremony
Wedding Ceremony Timeline: What to Expect & How Long Each Part Takes
1. Guest Arrival & Prelude
Typical Time: 15 - 30 minutes before processional
Sets the tone as guests arrive
Allows buffer for late arrivals
Outdoor ceremonies benefit from longer preludes
DJ makes any needed announcements during this time

Prelude music also allows time for final sound checks so vows are heard clearly.
2. Processional
Typical Time: 5–7 minutes
Depends on wedding party size
Songs are usually faded or timed to entrances
DJ cues each person in real time
For first time officiants, a reminder to have in their script to ask guests to please take their seats as they had just stood up for the bride
3. Ceremony & Vows

1. Cocktail Hour
Typical Time: 60 minutes
Background music at conversational levels
Time for photos and guest mingling

2. Grand Entrance
Typical Time: 2-4 minutes
Couple only or full wedding party
Sets the energy for the night
Short and punchy works best
The first dance can smoothly follow the grand entrance, but may also take place after the meal
3. Dinner Service

Depends on plated vs buffet vs family style
DJ releases tables and maintains flow for buffet lines
4. Toast Preparation
Typical Time: 10–15 minutes
Champagne service begins or the DJ invites guests to please charge their glasses for the upcoming toast

5. Toasts

8. Open Dance Floor #1
Typical Time: 30 - 45 minutes
Main celebration window with announcement reminders
DJ reads the room and adjusts energy
Bouquet and Garter Toss or ‘Games’ to follow
9. Bouquet Toss
Typical Time: 5 minutes
DJ invites all the single, unmarried ladies to the dance floor/toss area
When ready, the DJ will have everyone help countdown the toss
Guest who catches it is celebrated with cheers and a quick photo moment with the bride.
10. Garter Toss
Typical Time: 5 minutes
DJ invites all the single, unmarried fellas to the dance floor/toss area
A chair will be needed for the bride to sit on and the groom will remove the garter from her leg
The DJ will then excuse the bride and have everyone countdown the toss
Guest who catches the garter, then takes a photo with the groom
11. Open Dance Floor #2
Typical Time: 60 - 120 minutes
Main celebration window with announcement reminders
DJ reads the room and adjusts energy
12. Last Dance & Send-Off
Typical Time: 5–10 minutes
Final announcements are made
DJ invites all guests to the dance floor for the last song
Newlywed’s Private Dance may take place while guests head out to line up for a grand farewell send-off
